Bamboo
July 10 - August 4, 2008
Using brush and ink and monoprint techniques, Kalfus has been interpreting the bamboo image for years. Her work in this area reflects the influence of Sumi-e, the art of Japanese brush painting. She says that when she recently came upon a bamboo window shade she was taken with its patterns, colors and texture. That chance encounter caused her to think about painting bamboo with a more “western medium” such as oil paint. She became intrigued by the horizontal and vertical components of bamboo and the subtle differences in each node. Kalfus says that her “eyes see bamboo as pattern in a monochromatic theme” and that she “finds beauty in its simplicity and natural strength.”
